Hungarian beginner lesson: What does this sign say?

September 27, 2013 By Steven

Here’s a rather simple and common sign in Hungary. Obviously it is pointing to something. What is it trying to tell us?

gyalogos forgalom

“Gyalogos forgalom”

a) “Exit this way”

b) “Pedestrian traffic”

c) “Free beer”

Click on “Read more” to find out the answer and an explanation!

Answer:

b) “Pedestrian traffic”

Explanation:

Actually, the sign isn’t pointing to anything in particular, but rather pointing out where we have to walk, since typically this sign appears nears construction areas or places of road work.

Anyway, it’s a rather straightforward phrase consisting of only two words:

  • gyalogos = pedestrian

This word is derived from the common word gyalog = on foot. For example:

Csak öt perc gyalog. = It’s only 5 minutes away on foot./It’s only a 5-minute walk.

  • forgalom = traffic

Gyalogos forgalom = Pedestrian traffic
