Very happy to have found your site; I hope to travel back to Hungary for a family wedding in September 2015 and be able to say a few words while I’m there (other than in English!). Can you comment on what I might expect at an Hungarian wedding? I understand that the traditions differ from those in the U.S. and I would like to be a prepared and gracious guest. Are there any particular toasts (other than to your health) that I might expect to hear? Thanks!

Hi Susan, thanks for commenting! We’re glad you’re finding the podcast useful. You have a good question that we often get asked about. I have actually been to several weddings here in Hungary (more than in the US in fact!) and it’s true that they have some special wedding traditions here, particularly during the wedding reception. I think we’ll talk about this in an upcoming podcast, so please keep listening and hopefully we’ll be able to answer your questions 🙂

    Szia Steve and Györgyi,
I’m moving right along on your lessons and just got to 14. I wanted to thank both of you on the great job. Although 1/2 Hungarian, it’s been quite difficult to learn the language (my dad is fluent but never spoke to me in Hungarian as a child). I find that your podcast has really helped me understand conversational Hungarian better, especially the endings and conjugations. Thanks so much!!! I’m going to Hungary this year to visit family and my goal is to speak much more by the time I get there.

Thanks so much for wonderful website….Hungarian was mu first language but we left during 56 revolution so I grew up in Canada & US. We spoke Hungarian at home but after leaving home…getting a job and married to non-Hungarian…I no longer hear the language. My maiden name was Horvath…very common name in Hungary. I love your site and re-learning the language that has never left me. I hope to learn how to read Hungarian too….which my siblings learned to speak but not to read.

    Thank you,

    Betty

    Sziastok Steve es Gyurgyi,

My name is Martin, I’m Irish and I’ve been dating a Hungarian girl for almost seven months. I decided to learn to speak her native language and I came across your podcasts while searching for lessons. I just have to tell you both how great I find them. I am always able to surprise Judit with with more and more Hungarian. She is very impressed with my progress as I listen to the podcasts at every opportunity. I have been back to Budapest 7 times in the past 7 months and I absolutely love everything about it. So thank you both very much, as I am now more comfortable and confident with the prospect of relocating and learning a new language, these podcasts really have literally changed my life. (for the better! 🙂 ) Each time I return I can comunicate more with the people there and very importantly, her family are also very impredded too. 😀

So thank you very much and I look forward to the next installment.

    Martin.

A few months ago I contacted you about something you said in one of your podcasts early on. You mentioned that we should visit Ballaton Lake and lake Haides. I asked you where lake Haides was and you did not know what I was talking about.

Today I was watching a video about Hungary and they mentioned and showed lake Hevis. I just misunderstood what you had said.

Looking forward to your next podcast.

I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you to you guys. I have just returned home from Hungary and I must say that if it weren’t for you guys, I would have been completely lost. I have to admit that I am not the best speaker as of yet but I can truly understand a lot of the vocabulary when I hear it. every time someone would say something in hungarian my boyfriend would attempt to translated to me in English and most of the time I would tell him that he didn’t have to because I already understood what was being said. He was very impressed. I thank you both so very much and I hope that you will have more podcast in the future. They are so very helpful

My husband and I are having IVF in budapest so are spending a lot of time here. This is our 4th visit, hence the reason I wanted to learn some basics. Today we went to szentendre, yesterday to the Chinese market and took a ride on the 4-6 tram. We never would have done these things without these podcasts. I didn’t realise how much I’d learnt, I keep coming out with interesting facts, like how Arany Janos utca is named after the poet who translated Shakespeare into Hungarian! Thank you both so much. Could I also request the translation for “can I have 24hr/ 7 day travel pass”? Week days, months, more time translations would also be handy.

    Hello,
I just found your webpage and the wonderful learning materials. I have started to learn hungarian in the summer (with books, internet, Audi-CD) and I visit a course since september to get more practice. Now I listen to your dialogues and I really find it helpful to understand the spoken language. The first courses are just a repetition, but very a very good help to keep all the hungarian words and phrases in my head 😉
So…. I am just listening to course number 7 and need some time to reach the current level of your course. I would be very happy to find more of the nice dialogues, new words and useful information about hungarian lifestyle.
    Thank you and best regards
