Online translation and Mac OSX dictionary app

March 1, 2008 By Let's Learn Hungarian!

Listener Olivér has just provided us with two useful links.

1) Online Hungarian-English, English-Hungarian translation and multi-language dictionary:

http://www.webforditas.hu/index.php

I’m not too sold on machine translation yet, but it’s free, and certainly better than nothing.

2) An interesting looking pop-up dictionary application for Mac OSX (free for home use):

Közsi szépen, Olivér!

Thank you for the podcast. I am a mathematician and I have been visiting Hungary about once every two years. I have been to Budapest, of course, but also Balatonalmadi, Szeged and a small town called Morahalom. I want to be able to say a few things besides koszonom and bocsanat, especially to my colleagues’ families and to shop assistants.

This podcast is perfect for my needs. I was hoping that sometime soon, you could do a summary episode. I love the discussions about grammar, culture and the dialog, but it would be nice to have an episode with just some vocab quizzes (English to Magyarul and vice versa) and the dialogues straight through.

I have some friends at SzTAKI and I have to recommend their online translator as well.

Thanks for the feedback, Ryan! We’re glad you’re enjoying the lessons. I also think a consolidation lesson would be a good idea, so I am already planning one after the next lesson.

I agree with you about SzTAKI. They have an excellent online dictionary which is the first item under our links sidebar. I have been using it for years. It used to be riddled with numerous errors, but these have been largely cleaned up and it’s now an excellent resource.

Incidentally, I lived next door to the SzTAKI institute for four years, and I often saw brainy-looking foreigners coming out of there, so perhaps I’ve seen you there as well!

Have a look at this empty space on wikiversity. I think you guys could fill it.

Post more lessons please, and keep up the great work.

    Naygon kozsonom,

    Hi, sziasztok!
It,s the podcast i was looking for / ezt a podcastot hiányoltam már régóta 🙂
Szívesen hírt adnék rólatok az Almalap podcastjában (szintén fent az iTuneson), a mi letöltÅ‘-hallgatóink 30-35 százaléka külföldi, de magyarul beszél. Azt gondolom, hogy szívesen megosztanák a ti podcast linketeket a környezetükkel… A megadott mail címen megtaláltok (esetleg iChaten, ha Macet használtok).
Almalap (hungarian Macintosh Macazine) also has a podcast since 2006, 30-35 percent of downloaders/listeners live abroad – but i think they speak Hungarian. May be their friends, neighbours will subscribe to your podcast if i mention it in Almalap,s one. (You can find me by e-mail or on iChat, too).
(I was unable to find your e-mail address in that site 🙁
