Hungarian beginner lesson: What does this say?

September 9, 2013 By Steven

Here’s a new sign I saw posted on a door, right above a mailbox. What does the sign say?

picture of sign on door

“Vigyázz, lépcső!”

a) “No junk mail!”

b) “Mind the stairs!”

c) “Watch your head!”

Click on “Read More” for the answer and an explanation!

Answer:

b) “Mind the stairs!”

Explanation:

This is a simple sign made up of only two words:

  • vigyázz – watch out! (command in informal speech from the verb vigyáz = watch out, be careful)
  • lépcső – stairs

Vigyázz is a common command telling people to be careful or take care:

Vigyázz! A kutya harap. = Be careful! (This) dog bites.

Vigyázz, lépcső! = Mind the stairs!

Szia Steven, nice to see you posting again, I keep coming back to your podcasts but at 40 I find it takes me a long time to retain the new words. I won’t give up though, my partner of 2 years is hungarian and I love to speak to her in her native language.
Köszönöm szépen for all your hard work.

Köszönöm Russ! We’re not great at keeping up with new podcasts but we do plan to return with new podcast material.

Hungarian women do have a special charm – most likely that’s the reason I’ve been here so long 🙂
