Movie dialogue: “Üvegtigris” – Lali and Joli

May 8, 2017 By Let's Learn Hungarian!

Here’s a short clip from the popular 2001 Hungarian film “Üvegtigris” (“Glass Tiger”). This movie has quite a cult following in Hungary, and has even spawned two sequels!

Lali (short for “Lajos,” played by Péter Rudolf) runs a little snack bar in a trailer out in the countryside.

In this clip, Lali is visited by Joli (played by Juli Básti), who is trying to seduce him. But Joli is unaware that her own daughter is hiding inside the trailer right at Lali’s feet, and she’s not happy about her mother’s sexual advances on him!

Watch the following clip, more than once if necessary, and see if you can answer these questions that relate to the dialogue. (And ask a Hungarian to explain the R-rated pun in this clip!)

The answers to the questions, a transcript of the dialogue and English translation are all below.

Questions:
1. What excuse does Lali give Joli?

a. He’s tired.
b. He’s out of food.
c. He’s closing.
